Pamban fishermen have retrieved a drum like buoy, weighing about three tonnes, found floating on the high seas near the Poomarichan island and handed it over to the Marine police of Coastal Security Group (CSG).
Four Pamban fishermen, who had set out for fishing on Monday in a country boat, were fishing on the high seas when they found the buoy on Monday night.
As they had no knowledge about the object, they pulled it to the shore on Tuesday morning, police said.
On being informed, the Marine police seized the buoy and registered a case under section 102 of Cr PC (Police seizing any property which may be alleged or suspected to have been stolen or founder under suspicious circumstances)
The drum measured 17 feet in length and 3 feet in circumference and weighed about three tonnes, Marine Inspector of Police P S Ramesh Kumar said. It was one of the drums tied together and used to lay a platform on high seas by the crew of a vessel to carry out repair works, he said.
The marine police have taken possession of the buoy which was presently kept at the Mundhalmunai seashore, he said.
As the drum was one of the four or five drums tied together for laying platform, a claimant is unlikely, he added.
