An unspecified quantity of powdered tobacco leaves stored in a godown at Mamarathupalayam on the city outskirts by a beedi company was burnt in a fire that erupted reportedly due to electricity leak on Tuesday morning.

Fire tenders were rushed to extinguish the smoke. The extent of damage could not be ascertained immediately. It was a second such incident in recent months, said Assistant District Fire Officer Saravanan.

In fact, smoke rather than fire emanates when tobacco is burnt. The fire tenders moved well in time to put down the smoke and safeguard a major portion of the stock, Mr. Saravanan said.
