An earthquake of ‘slight intensity' was experienced at Mulanur and nearby nine hamlets under Dharapuram revenue division in the district on Wednesday.
Revenue Divisional Officer (Dharapuram division) R. Azhagumeena told The Hindu that the quake, reported at 6.37 a.m., measured ‘3.0' on the Richter Scale. It was measured using the seismogram placed at the Indian Meteorological Department's station in Salem.
No major damage was reported to life and property from any of the affected areas, though some residents complained of cracks on the walls of their houses.
Official sources said that the epicentre of the quake was at 10.7 degree north (latitude) and 77.7 degree east (longitude), which is very close to Mulanur.
The quake, that lasted few seconds, was felt in a five-km radius.
People living in Karayur, Mulanur, Maruthagoundavalasu,Kamblianpatti and Alampalayam, among few other places, said they heard a thunderous noise at the time of the quake.
Seismologists said that a quake of slight intensity was recorded in the nearby Chinnadharapuram area, situated around 18 km from Mulanur, in the mid-90s, even though the region is not quake-prone.
