DMK opposes Bill on market committees

Published - January 08, 2019 12:48 am IST - CHENNAI

When the AIADMK government introduced a Bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1987, to replace an ordinance passed in this regard, DMK legislator E.V. Velu (Tiruvannamalai) opposed it on his party’s behalf. The Act empowers the State government to appoint special officers to manage the affairs of the market committees, pending the constitution of new committees, for a period not exceeding three years in the aggregate.

In accordance with the Act, special officers were appointed to 23 market committees to manage their affairs. Since their tenure was to expire on November 29, 2018, and there was a need to extend it further, the Governor promulgated an ordinance. The Bill was introduced in the House to replace the ordinance.
