The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-headed Vellore Corporation cannot even dispose of garbage properly, let alone fulfill other basic needs like drinking water, street lights, roads, drainage and mosquito eradication, said Durai Murugan, Principal Secretary of the DMK and former Minister.

Speaking at the venue of a demonstration organised by the Vellore Urban District DMK in front of the Head Post Office here to condemn the “administrative deterioration” in the Vellore Corporation on Wednesday, Mr. Murugan said that the barometer to determine the efficiency of a local body is its capacity to safely dispose of daily garbage generated by the body.

Garbage to villages

Ridiculing the way in which the Corporation is taking garbage to different villages, he said the problem was not there when the DMK was at the helm of the Corporation. “If you had asked former Mayor P. Karthikeyan, he would have guided you on how to solve the problem”, he said.

T.A. Mohammed Saqhy, Vellore district DMK presidium chairman said that the AIADMK administration has gone back on the election eve promise made by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa that electricity would be produced from garbage. P. Karthikeyan, Vellore Urban District DMK secretary presided.

R. Gandhi, Vellore East District Secretary and A.P. Nandakumar, Vellore Central District Secretary participated.

Later, Mr. Murugan and others raised slogans urging the Corporation not to convert Vellore into a `kuppai kaadu’ (garbage forest), to fully implement the Cauvery River-based Combined Drinking Water Scheme and to expedite the completion of the Underground Drainage Scheme.
