Karunanidhi’s vital signs normalising after transient setback, says hospital

DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi suffered a setback to his health past midnight on July 28 at his residence in Gopalapuram, Chennai. He was rushed to the nearby Kauvery Hospital. In a bulletin, the hospital said there was a drop in his blood pressure and it was stabilised. He is in the ICU and treated by a panel of doctors.

The nonagenarian leader was suffering from fever and infection for the past few days and was being treated round-the-clock by a team of doctors and nursing personnel at his house.

On July 29, the DMK released a picture of Mr. Karunanidhi in hospital bed when Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu visited him at the hospital.

The crowd stayed put outside the hospital even past midnight refusing to disperse despite assurances from leaders that Mr Karunanidhi was recovering with medical support.

DMK leaders A. Raja, E.V. Velu arrive at the Kauvery Hospital where DMK president M. Karunanidhi is admitted. Congress leader Salman Khurshid visits Kauvery Hospital. Mr. Karunanidhi's son Alagiri says his father is doing well.

Meanwhile, Anna University announces that no holiday has been declared for its constituent colleges.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami who was on a official visit to Salem, returned to Chennai late on Sunday night.

In a statement to DMK cadres, working president M.K. Stalin stated that the DMK president had a transient setback in his health for some time and with the medical support, his health condition returned to normal.

Mr. Stalin further requested the party cadres to fully cooperate with the police without causing disturbances to the public. He also requested them to maintain peace and avoid any untoward incident.

Police appeal DMK cadres to disperse. Barricades were damaged at some places.  Despite repeated requests from police and DMK leader A. Raja to the crowd to disperse, they refused to budge.

A Kauvery Hospital  bulletin says the DMK president’s health condition continues to remain stable with ongoing medical support. The release further states that he is continuously being monitored and treated by a panel of expert doctors in the ICU.

Auditor S. Gurumurthy, who arrived earlier to the hospital, tells journalists, "Karunanidhi has got laurels for Tamil Nadu not only in politics but across several fields. The State should have some more time under his leadership."

Mr. Karunanidhi's daughter, Kanimozhi, MP, says her father is better now and the hospital will release a health bulletin shortly.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, in a statement issued from Salem, says the government is willing to provide all medical help to Mr. Karunanidhi, if it is sought. "He was a five-time Chief Minister and had ruled the State for long," he notes.

He points out that Deputy Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam and senior Ministers had visited the former Chief Minister at his residence and enquired about his health. “We were told he is fine,” he adds.

9.00 a.m.

Ms. Kanimozhi arrives at the hospital. Mr. Karunanidhi's other daughter Selvi is already there. Other family members are expected to arrive soon. A. Raja also arrives.

8.30 a.m.

3.50 a.m.

As the hospital has informed that Mr. Karunanidhi is responding to treatment, the crowd starts dispersing. Apparently with the same sense of relief, his family members, including Mr. Stalin and former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, too start leaving the hospital.  

 

3.25 a.m.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief S. Thirunavukkarasar visits the hospital. He says Mr. Karunanidhi is reacting well to treatment. Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mukul Wasnik will be visiting Mr. Karunanidhi later in the day, he adds.

3 a.m.

Viduthalai Chiruthalaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan visits the hospital. He says Mr. Karunanidhi's blood pressure is back to normal and that indicates that the DMK supremo will recover soon.

“DMK president and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi has been admitted on July 28, 2018 in the intensive care unit of the Kauvery Hospital at 1.30 a.m. following a drop in blood pressure. His blood pressure has been stabilised with medical management and he continues to be monitored and treated by a panel of expert doctors,” the Kauvery Hospital says in a bulletin issued on Mr. Karunanidhi’s health.

‘Karunanidhi's BP has been stabilised’

A. Raja says Mr. Karunanidhi's blood pressure has been stabilised after treatment. ''There was a dip in his blood pressure and he is now stable. There's no need to react emotionally. Within 20 minutes of treatment in the hospital, his blood pressure became normal and He’s out of danger.”

Only on Friday,, the DMK patriarch crossed a milestone when he became the first leader to enter the 50th year as president of a party. He was elected party president on July 27, 1969. Five months earlier, on February 10, 1969, he was elected the legislature party leader of the DMK and became the Chief Minister of the State following the death of party founder C.N. Annadurai.

Mr. Stalin, Mr. Alagiri, Ms. Kanimozhi and her mother Rajathi Ammal arrive at the hospital. Reports say a health bulletin is expected from the hospital anytime. 

 

Apart from his family members, party functionaries keep arriving at the hospital.

Crowd build ups outside the hospital. Security beefed up in and around the area. Slogans like "Long live Kalaignar Karunanidhi" rent the air. 

1.25 am

The ambulance carrying Mr. Karunanidhi arrives at the Kauvery Hospital.

 

1.15 am

Around midnight, Mr. Stalin, Ms. Kanimozhi and Mr. Alagiri rush to Mr. Karunanidhi's house upon learning that his health had deteriorated. Several senior DMK functionaries and Mr Karunanidhi’s long time personal physician Dr Gopal also arrive at Gopalapuram and make arrangements for an ambulance to take him to the Kauvery Hospital around 12.50 a.m.

Hundreds of party cadres and well-wishers start converging at Gopalapuram and many were seen in tears and raising slogans such as “Dr Kalaignar vaazhga” (Long live Karunanidhi).
