DMK president M. Karunanidhi, who was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet here early on Saturday following a sharp drop in his blood pressure, is stable in the Intensive Care Unit, a medical bulletin said.

“Mr. Karunanidhi’s health condition continues to remain stable with ongoing active medical support. He is continuously being monitored and treated by the panel of expert doctors in the Intensive Care Unit,” Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of Kauvery Hospital, said in a bulletin issued at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

High-profile visitors

The hospital saw a steady stream of high-profile visitors through the day who met Mr. Karunanidhi’s family members, including his son M.K. Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi, to inquire about his health.

Hundreds of DMK cadres maintained vigil outside the hospital, praying for the nonagenarian leader’s recovery.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, editor of Thughlak and RSS ideologue S. Gurumurthy and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran were among those who visited the hospital.

““Karunanidhiji is totally stable... he is improving... we are praying for his speedy recovery,” Mr. Azad told reporters.

The DMK leader’s estranged son M.K. Alagiri, who was expelled from the party in January 2014, also visited his father’s house and the hospital.

Actors including Prabhu and Nasser also paid a visit to the hospital.
