The Coimbatore District Police on Monday arrested P. Malli alias Subramani, 37, Mettupalayam town secretary of the DMDK, for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the Chief Minister on Facebook.

Mr. Subramani is also councillor of Ward Number 12.

Superintendent of Police of Coimbatore District M. Sudhakar told The Hindu that Mr. Subramani made the remark on Saturday in connection with an article derogatory to the Chief Minister on the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry’s website.

A. Vanmathi Set, the Mettupalayam town secretary of the AIADMK, lodged a complaint with the Mettupalayam police on Saturday. “The issue was brought to the notice of the Additional Public Prosecutor in Coimbatore for legal opinion; thereafter, a case was registered on Saturday,” he said.

Mr. Subramani was remanded in custody.

DMDK town president M. Somasunadarm filed a complaint, seeking action against Santhanam, AIADMK trade union joint secretary, for allegedly making a defamatory remark against DMDK founder Vijayakanth on Facebook.

The police said he had shared a picture posted by someone else. “This issue was also taken to the Additional Public Prosecutor, who felt that a case need not be registered as it was not a cognisable offence,” Mr. Sudhakar said.
