Residents of Anaimedu in the city staged a sit-in agitation on Collectorate premises on Monday complaining that land mafia were trying to displace the families staying on a 5.62 acre plot in the area.
Over 200 families are staying on the plot donated to people of a particular community during the British regime.
After the original title-holders passed away, the present set of families have been residing in the area for the last many decades, said S. Ravi, one of the residents of the area and also the district president of Bahujan Samaj Party.
He told reporters that some people had come asking the entire families to move away immediately with the claim that they had purchased the plot.
Already, they have succeeded in getting 40 families shifted. How come these people buy the plot now when all the original landholders died many decades back, he asked.
The documents they brought along to claim the title deeds are bogus, the residents claimed.
They wanted the district administration to resolve the matter.
We are ready to prove our claims that the documents brought by the people who said to have purchased the land were bogus, if the administration can convene a meeting, Mr. Ravi said.
The agitators dispersed after senior revenue officials agreed to look into the matter.
