: Lying on the banks of River Cauvery, people in the constituency depend more on agriculture for their livelihood in Namakkal district.
The constituency, which was earlier part of Kabilarmalai Assembly constituency, was formed after constituency delimitations in 2008. U. Thaniyarasu, founder of Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilaignar Peravai, contested in the AIADMK party symbol two-leaves in 2011 Assembly election and emerged victorious.
However, electors demand for establishing industries and creating infrastructure for overall development of the constituency remain only in papers. Betel leaves and banana are cultivated in most of the areas along the river and marketed across the State.
Absence of technology in betel leaf production and losing the export opportunities made the farmers market their products for lower price. Farmers have been demanding for establishing a research centre for many years now. But, their demand is yet to take shape.
Also, banana crop is raised in vast area in the constituency. In the absence of cold storage facility, farmers were forced to sell the banana at the available price.
Hence, they were demanding cold storage facility so that their produce could be stored and sold when they get suitable price.
Encroachments in Idumban lake is worrying the people as water shortage looms large.
People want the lake to be desilted, encroachments removed and the lake to be developed as tourist centre. Currently, Jedarpalayam Dam is the only tourist spot for the people to spend their time with family members.
During emergency, as fire service vehicle comes only from Karur district, the need for a separate fire service station is growing up. People also demand bus services to Kolli Hills, stop illegal water tapping from River Cauvery and also want job opportunities for people in the constituency.
Tough competition is on the cards between R. Rajendhiran of AIADMK and K.S. Moorthy of DMK as people want development rather than promises. Other candidates in the fray include K. Muthukumar (DMDK), S. Rajkumar (BJP), C. Boopathi (KMDK), Pon. Ramesh (PMK) and G. Deivasigamani (Naam Tamilar Katchi).
