Decision to reduce width of AMC Road irks traders

June 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - DINDIGUL:

Though the Dindigul Corporation Council had resolved to take over 22 feet of land to widen AMC Road to ease traffic congestion near central bus stand, the corporation officials have decided to reduce the width of the land to 15 feet.

Their sudden decision has attracted the wrath of traders and owners of commercial buildings who have already demolished their buildings within the area originally earmarked by the corporation for taking up road widening work and kept the area clean.

The corporation council has already passed a resolution to take over 22 feet of land on the flanks of AMC Road.

The highly irked traders and commercial building owners argued with corporation officials who visited the spot on Thursday to inform them about the decision to reduce the width of the road.

“We had demolished all structures as directed by corporation officials. The corporation should go ahead with its original plan. What is the necessity to reduce the width of the road now,” they questioned. “Even the original width will not suffice to meet the future needs of road users. Reduction in size will not serve the purpose at all,” they said.

Meanwhile, other traders have decided to take the issue to the street pressing the corporation to be impartial and take a decision beneficial to the people and for the future development of the town. They have appealed to the civic body not to encourage people with vested interests.

Many traders have vacated shops and building owners demolished buildings on their own in the past three days to widen AMC Road, the arterial road connecting business and trade centres and central bus stand.
