Suspected rapist and child killer Daswant, who had escaped from police custody in Mumbai, was rearrested on Friday and brought to Chennai by a flight on Saturday.

It was his weakness for racing that enabled the police to nab him, after he ran away from them on Thursday.

Charged with murder and sexual assault of a minor and the murder of his mother, Daswant escaped to Mumbai, where he was trapped by the police at the Mahalakshmi Race Course.

The police found him again at Kala Goda, where he had come to bet on horses.

Daswant, 23, was in the news after he was charged with sexually assaulting and murdering a seven-year-old girl, his neighbour in Mugalivakkam, last February.

A week ago, he was on the run after the police suspected him to have killed his mother and stolen her jewellery and some money.

After a long search, the special team nabbed him at the Mahalakshmi Race Course, Mumbai, on Wednesday. The next day, he was produced in court for obtaining a transit warrant and brought to the Mumbai airport.

He then escaped from the police, kicking his escort Inspector C. Charles on the chest when they were waiting near an eatery at Vile Parle.

An investigation officer told The Hindu , “He ran into lanes and bylanes to evade us. We communicated the message of his escape to the Mumbai police. Since we are aware of his habits and interests – addiction to betting on horses and sex, we zeroed in on him following some clues. At last, we caught him at Kala Ghoda, which is famous for racing activities.”

He was produced on Saturday before the Chief Judicial Magistrate at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, which granted a transit remand to be produced in a jurisdictional court at Sriperumpudur within three days.

Amidst tight security, he was taken to the Mumbai airport to be brought to Chennai.

Bail cancelled

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the sessions court in Chengalpet has cancelled the bail granted to him in the first case.

“We will expedite the trial in the previous case and will ensure that the accused is convicted soon. In the instant case, there will not be any delay in filing charge sheet against the accused,” said Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan.
