The Tiruvannamalai Collector inspected and ordered the closure of a private children’s home in Vengikal on Monday reportedly for not adhering to government regulations, on Monday.

There are a total of 31 private children’s homes functioning in Tiruvannamalai district. The Collector K.S. Kandaswamy has inspected 16 of them so far to check whether they are following the norms laid down by the government.

“There are many norms that need to be fulfilled to run a home and this includes a healthy atmosphere for the children to stay and a play area among others,” said an official.

On Monday, the Collector inspected the home functioning in Thendral Nagar, Vengikal. He found that though the institution had taken permission to house only nine girls, a total of 14 girls were residing in the home.

“They were being accommodated in a cramped space. Besides, in the adjacent street 15 boys were housed despite not having permission to run the home for boys,” said an official.

‘Malnourished children’

During the inspection, the Collector found that the children were malnourished. “The closure was ordered and the children will be shifted to a government home. Most of the children either have a single parent or are orphans,” added the official.
