Investigation of the case relating to the murder of the president of the Thirumanam panchayat in Tiruvallur district in April will be conducted by the CBI.
Justice S. Nagamuthu of the Madras High Court on Friday ordered the transfer of investigation to the Central agency following a petition by V. Rathika, wife of the slain panchayat chief S. Veeran.
Considering the gravity of the offence and the fact that the investigation has not resulted in the collection of useful material against culprits, it will be in the interest of justice to transfer the case to the CBI, Mr. Justice Nagamuthu said. Ms. Rathika said her husband was also the block joint secretary of the Puratchi Bharatham Katchi. He was elected unopposed as the panchayat chief twice in the past. Veeran was murdered on April 20 . She alleged that an MLA and some police personnel were behind the murder. On an earlier occasion, the Judge had directed the Gummidipoondi DSP to file a status report. The police officer submitted that investigation had been completed. No material was available against the accused. The judge held that the matter required investigation by some other competent officer.
