The recently formed Nilgiris District Billiards and Snooker Association organised a function at Coonoor on Wednesday to felicitate Mariam Agnes, a budding woman cueist.

Daughter of A.J.S. Kumar, a Billiards table marker at the Coonoor Club, Agnes is a Class VIII student at the Saint Joseph’s Convent. She participated in the State ranking championship held in Chennai recently. She also took part in the nationals held at Kolkata, where she was the runner up in the junior level.

Considering the promise the young girl was showing, though she had started playing seriously only about an year ago, the association decided to honour her.

Pointing out that she was the only woman member of the association, executive committee member R. Muralidharan recalled the historic association of the Blue Mountains with the game of snooker and added that the hill station had in the past hosted major tournaments. The aim of the association was to revive its past glory.

He pointed out that many in The Nilgiris had a natural flair for the game.

The association would unearth talent and provide all the encouragement possible.
