BJP wary of new Congress avatar

While they are upbeat about the growing support for their party in Tamil Nadu, a few BJP leaders are nevertheless worried about the launch of a new Congress variant.

According to a senior leader, ever since the Lok Sabha elections, the party had been steadily improving its base in the State.

The details are not be available, but there was a feeling within the party that many Congress sympathisers were moving towards the BJP.

“The Sri Lankan Tamils issue has eroded the Congress organisation big time. We are a great beneficiary as the BJP is always seen as the national alternative to the Congress,” the leader said.

However, a regional variant of the Congress could stop this flow and up the competition for the precious political space, which is getting crowded by the day.

Under G.K. Moopanar, the Tamil Maanila Congress had a significant presence in rural areas, especially in the southern regions.

“We now need to improve our activities so that those who want to move from other parties should not begin thinking about the Tamil Maanila Congress,” the leader said.
