MARCH 29, 1996: The followers of the Congress(I) leader, Mr. G. K. Moopanar floated a new party at Tirupparankundram following the high command's decision to revive ties with the AIADMK.

>Tamil Nadu Makkal Congress party formed

APRIL 1, 1996: Tamil Nadu Makkal Congress was formed by Congressmen owing allegiance to Mr. G. K. Moopanar.

>EC recognises Moopanar party

APRIL 3, 1996: The Election Commission recognised the breakaway Congress headed by Mr. G. K. Moopanar as a regional party in Tamil Nadu.

>Pressure on Moopanar to 'crown' his son

JUNE 26, 2001: TMC men were mounting pressure on the president, Mr. G.K. Moopanar, to bring his son, Mr. G.K. Govindavasan (G.K.Vasan), in the political limelight.

>G.K. Vasan unanimously elected

SEPT 1, 2001: Mr. G.K. Govindavasan, now known as G.K. Vasan, to lead the Tamil Maanila Congress.

>TMC determined to carry on Moopanar legacy

SEPT 12, 2001: The TMC in the southern districts is determined to continue from where its founder-leader left it after his demise. The local leaders are in no haste to merge the TMC with the Congress.

>TMC also walks out on AIADMK

JAN 12, 2002: The TMC, a key ally of the AIADMK in the Assembly elections and the local body elections, announced that it would not support the party in the by-elections.

>TMC folded up, party wants EC to freeze cycle symbol

JULY 8, 2002: Winding up the six-year-old Tamil Maanila Congress, its general council "unanimously" decided to reunite with the parent Congress to pave the way for "restoring Kamaraj rule" in the State.

AUG 13, 2002: At a time when both the TMC and the Congress are mounting a last minute campaign to make the "historic merger conference" in Madurai a huge success, these announcements by a section of the TMC legislature party has no doubt jolted the leadership.

AUG 14, 2002: Curtains come down on Tamil Maanila Congress, at the "Moopanar Thidal" in Madurai.

>Let's bring back Kamaraj

AUG 15, 2002: Tamil Maanila Congress rejoined the parent Congress; the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, appointed its president, G.K.Vasan, as a new AICC secretary.
