Education enriches humane behaviour, discipline, traditional and cultural values, love and respect. It is not just learning but shaping one’s overall personality towards achievement, observed S. Vimala, Judge, Madras High Court, while addressing students of Padmabhushan Sri N. Ramaswami Ayyar Educational Complex during the 119th birth anniversary celebrations of founder Padmabhushan N. Ramaswami Ayyar. She said women’s education paves the way for developed society and thereby aims at achieving former president A.P.J.Abdul Kalam’s dream of developed India. Providing insights from the life of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, she said she had emphasised service mindedness, perseverance and determination. Kannan Panchapakesan, Director-Academics, honoured the retiring staff of the institution. Prizes were given to winners of various founder’s day inter-collegiate and inter-school competitions.

Athletics meet

Students of St. Joseph’s College excelled in the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate athletics meet. In the men’s section, they bagged a total of 23 medals (11 gold, nine silver, and three bronze). St. Joseph’s College was adjudged the men’s team champion. In the women’s category, R. Jothi won gold medals in the 5km run and 1500 metre race. Rev. Fr. S. Sebastian, secretary, Rev. Fr. F. Andrew, Principal, Rev. Fr. Aruldoss, sports coordinator, and A. Prem Edwin, Director of Physical Education, felicitated the students.

Meet on applied mathematics

Students and researchers should be fully aware of the latest trends in Applied Mathematics and Computer Simulations, said A. Nagoorgani, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Jamal Mohamed College, who inaugurated a two-day national conference on ‘Applied Mathematics and Computer Simulation - Recent Trends, 2015,’ organised by TBML College, Porayar. G. Jonas Gunasekaran, Principal, presided. T. Tamizh Chelvam, Dean and Head, Department of Mathematics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Nagoorgani, T. Robinson, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Dean of International Studies, M.C.C, Chennai, A.R. Meenakshi, former Professor Emeritus, Annamalai University, M. Sundararajan, Senior Principal Scientist and Dean of Engineering Mathematics, CSIR-CIMFR, Jharkhand, V. Lakshmana Gomathi Nayagam, Associate Professor of Mathematics, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, spoke during the technical sessions. Around 150 research scholars and staff members from various institutions in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry participated. Nearly 60 technical papers were presented at the conference.

Seminar

A seminar on ‘Accreditation, Standards and Management in Higher Education,’ sponsored by Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan, was organised at Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology at Karaikal. Faculty members from various colleges in Puducherrry participated in the seminar. K.S. Balan, former scientist, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, spoke on the strategy being followed on accreditation. E. Vallavan, Collector, presided. Technical sessions were held in which V. Ganapathy, professor from SRM University, Chennai, E. Srinivasan, faculty from Pondicherry Engineering College and T. Thyagarajan, Director, Centre for University and Industry Collaboration, Anna University, spoke.

Lecture on

breast cancer

Sasipriya Govindaraj, Radiation Oncologist, Harshamitra Super Speciality Cancer Institute and Research Centre, explained the causes, risk factors and facts of breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer, while delivering a lecture on breast cancer organised by Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. R. Senthamarai, Principal, T. Shri Vijaya Kirubha, secretary, Periyar Health Club, and A. Shameem, joint secretary, spoke.

New block opened

A new block was opened at the EGS Pillay Engineering College in memory of former president A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. .Jothimany Ammal presided over the function and college secretary S.Parameswaran, College Director Sathish Kumar and the Principal Ramabalan took part in the opening ceremony. Benjamin Babu opened the memorial block which houses research and development department and an auditorium.
