Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Thursday arrested a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and a Sub-Inspector for demanding and accepting a bribe to the tune of ₹1.45 lakh.

P. Thanarajan, DSP of Ambur sub-division and Lourdu Jayaraj, Sub-Inspector attached to the Ambur Town station, were arrested following a complaint from Panneerselvam alias Raj (41), a resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Sanangkuppam in Ambur, according to a police officer attached to DVAC, Vellore.

“Panneerselvam was transporting sand from the government-approved quarries with permit. He stopped after the quarries were closed. But the DSP forced him and five others, who were running brick kilns and hollow block units, to smuggle sand. As the six of them had lorries, he demanded ₹20,000 per lorry – amounting to ₹1.20 lakh, and ₹25,000 as Pongal bonus,” he said.

Following this, Panneerselvam lodged a complaint with the DVAC.

On Thursday, Lourdu Jayaraj met Panneerselvam and others opposite OAR Theatre in Ambur Town and accepted ₹25,000. He asked them to go to the DSP’s camp office. The DSP took ₹1.20 lakh from them at the camp office located in Ambur Town. A team led by Additional Superintendent of Police, DVAC M. Balasubramanian and DSP Ramamoorthy arrested them.
