Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday urged striking contract employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation to resume work, saying he will take up their demands with the Centre.
In his meeting with members of various trade unions, including DMK and PMK at the Secretariat here, Mr. Karunanidhi asked them to resume work so as to ensure a “conducive atmosphere” in which he could take up their demands with the Centre and bring an amicable solution, an official release said.
Later, speaking to reporters, Panrutti MLA P. Velmurugan of the PMK-affiliated trade union said the Chief Minister had assured to look into the demands of the NLC workers and said the unions will meet later to decide on whether to continue with the strike or not.
Over 13,000 contract workers of NLC began indefinite strike on September 19 demanding implementation of their 10-point charter of demands, including permanent employment, service regularisation, bonus and equal pay for equal work.
