A film director, who allegedly cheated some aspiring actors of over Rs.7 lakh, was arrested by the Teynampet police on Tuesday.
Police sources said the accused Arvind. G.Mehta (32), a native of Manapparai, set up an acting institute on Habibullah Road, T Nagar. He advertisements in newspapers a few months ago inviting those interested to act in movies. Arvind collected large sums of money from some persons who responded to the advertisements by promising them roles in a film that he was directing.
A 41-year-old woman, Reeta, of Tirupur gave him Rs. 5.9 lakh for getting a lead role for her teenaged daughter, police said.
The shooting of Arvind's movie was abruptly stopped. He promised the aspirants that he would return the money but he did not do so, police said. Based on a complaint lodged by Reeta, the Teynampet police arrested Arvind.
He was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
