Asserting that the Communist Party of India will support the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the Pennagaram by-election, CPI leader R. Nallakannu has urged the Election Commission to ensure a free and fair poll. Mr. Nallakannu was here on Sunday to participate in a demonstration organised by the CPI demanding a CB-CID probe into the mysterious death of a Standard XI student.

During an informal chat with reporters after the protest, Mr. Nallakannu said names of over 25,000 qualified voters had been deleted from the electoral rolls and immediate steps should be taken by the Election Commission to restore them.

Asked about the chances of fielding a ‘common candidate’ in Pennagaram to take on the ruling party candidate, Mr. Nallakannu ruled out such a possibility.
