AIADMK to stage protests on March 6

Published - March 05, 2010 01:20 am IST - CHENNAI

The AIADMK will hold demonstration across the State on March 6 to urge the Centre to withdraw the hike in the excise duty on petrol and diesel. Demonstrations will also be held in Puducherry, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, New Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a statement here, party secretary Jayalalithaa said the hike in the excise duty had resulted in an increase in the price of petrol and diesel and in turn an increase in the price of essential commodities and transport cost. “When everyone is expecting measures in the budget for controlling the price of essential commodities, the hike in the excise duty has added fuel to the fire,” she alleged.
