Of the total 322 village panchayats in the district, all the houses in 61 villages have individual household latrines. The villages have been declared as open defecation-free by the village panchayats.

Officials of the District Rural Development Authority (DRDA)said that the toilets in select villages in Panchayat Unions of Elachipalayam, Erumapatty, Kabilarmalai, Kolli Hills, Mallasumudram, Mohanur, Namagiripettai, Namakkal, Pallipalayam, Paramathi, Puduchatram, Rasipuram, Sendamangalam, Tiruchengode and Vennandur also have toilets in Anganwadi centres, Panchayat Union Primary Schools and Middle Schools and Integrated Men and Women Sanitation Complexes. Either the available toilets in these areas were renovated or toilets were newly constructed and were put to use.

Resolution

Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy said that the 61 village panchayats were declared open-defecation free by passing resolutions during Gram Sabha meeting held during Gandhi Jayanthi. He said that steps would be taken to construct toilets in all the village panchayats.

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, villagers are encouraged to construct individual household latrines by the DRDA.
