Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, on Tuesday, announced in the Assembly that a new 4000-MW thermal power plant would be set up in Ramanathapuram at a total cost of Rs. 24,000 crore.
Making a statement under Rule 110, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had announced several power projects with an aim to achieve the target of 20,000 MW additional capacity as envisaged in the ‘Vision 2023’document.
“I am happy to announce that an ultra mega power project with a capacity of 4000 MW would be set up at a cost of Rs. 24,000 crore in Kadaladi Taluk of Ramanathapuram,” she said, adding that work on the project would begin once necessary clearances are obtained.
The Chief Minister said since 2011 the State has been adding 5954.5 MW to the grid through various means, including projects of Tangedco and those under PPP model.
“The government headed by me has made great achievements in the power front to the extent of achieving self sufficiency,” she pointed out, listing projects for which preliminary works have begun.
A detailed project report for the 2,000 MW Sillahala Hydel Power Project was being prepared, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa also announced a slew of projects aimed at improving transmission infrastructure. This would include a 3x1500 MVA pooling sub-station in North Chennai at a cost of Rs. 2,335 crore, a 2x1500 MVA sub-station in Ariyalur worth Rs 2,121.45 crore and a 2x1500 MVA sub-station in Coimbatore at a cost of Rs. 2,335 crore.
