Government, Opposition clash over technicalities of passage of anti-graft Bill

Published - April 04, 2018 10:21 pm IST - New Delhi

The Rajya Sabha, after witnessing 13 adjournments, was adjourned for the day on Wednesday evening after the government introduced the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013 amid din.

The government and the Opposition clashed over technicalities of the passage of the Bill. As the voice vote could not be completed, the Bill could not be passed.

Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said while the government seemed keen on pushing the Bill, it did not show the same enthusiasm for discussing other issues such as the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes (Prevention) Atrocities Act, constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and the bank scams.

The House witnessed four adjournments in the morning and nine in the afternoon.

At 2 p.m., when the House reconvened, Mr. Azad stressed that besides being responsible for the passage of the Bills, MPs represented the people of India and were mandated to raise their issues. Soon after he spoke, members from the TDP stormed into the Well of the House carrying “Save Andhra Pradesh” placards and demanded implementation of the A.P. Reorganisation Act.

“Narendra Modi is anti-Dalit,: shouted Congress and BSP members.

Disruption in Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha proceedings were disrupted for the 20th consecutive day due to protests by AIADMK members seeking early constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board.

The Speaker announced adjournment for the day.
