Schools closed in Imphal

Published - July 25, 2014 09:09 am IST - IMPHAL:

All government and private schools, colleges and other educational institutes in the Imphal east and Imphal west districts have been closed till Monday. The current budget session of the Manipur Assembly is scheduled to end on Monday.

A government notification issued late on Thursday cited the police reports about the alarming law and order situation in the districts. Though idr did not specify, students of some educational institutes have been creating law and order problems demanding the reimplementation of the Inner Line Permit system in Manipur. Under the circumstances the government took the decision to close down the institutes till Monday.

Heads of institutes have been directed to abide by the government order strictly. Police and fire brigades have been asked to step up vigilance to prevent incendiary in the educational institutes.

It may be recalled that students in these two districts have been taking out to streets demanding reimplementation of the ILP system in Manipur to check unbridled influx of outsiders and foreigners.

According to statistics available the population of the non-locals is next to the Meiteis, the non-tribal Manipuris and that they have more population than all tribes in the state put together.

All these years one NGO has been demanding the regulation of the entry and stay of the outsiders in Manipur. Recently the students had joined the campaign.

Meanwhile there is public outrage against the excesses of some police personnel in quelling the protests by the students. Several forms of agitations have been going on in Manipur and indications are that the closure of the educational institutes will not mean the end of the protracted agitations.
