June 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - CUTTACK:

An undertrial prisoner (UTP) from Choudwar jail, brought here for medical check-up in SCB Medical College and Hospital, escaped from the custody of the escort party on Saturday morning.

While nine UTPs accompanied by nine jail guards had come to the Hospital for different clinical tests in the morning, one Pritam Bose (25) escaped from the custody allegedly by throwing chilli powder in the eyes of one of the guards.

A native of Cuttack city, Pritam was in jail since April 21 this year on charges of dacoity and violation of provisions under Arms Act. Pritam was also involved in many other cases, sources said. “A manhunt has been launched with the help of Commissionerate police,” informed Choudwar jailor Sitanshu Kumar Deb.

The eight other UTPs, taken to the hospital, were brought back to the jail soon after the incident, the jailor informed.
