Unauthorised colony demolished in Agartala

Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched demolition drive against unauthorised settlements in the city area. Despite noisy protests, the AMC Task Force evicted the encroachers from government land at Kumaritilla near G.B.P. Hospital on Thursday.

The authorities enforced Section 144 and deployed security force in strength during demolition of the settlement. Tension started brewing in the locality after AMC deadline for voluntary eviction ended on Wednesday.

Hundreds of protesters blocked important road leading to the hospital last night for a few hours against move of the AMC. State BJP leaders and workers joined the protest and main opposition Congress condemned the eviction without proper rehabilitation of the evacuees.

AMC Task Force used dozers to raze the settlement while security force kept the residents at bay. The occupants continued protests and women were seen scuffling with police personnel.

AMC officials said 44 families were evicted at Kumaritilla. They said demolition drive would continue in unauthorised settlements of Agartala.
