Less than 48 hours after a Guwahati college suspended one of its teachers for an “objectionable” Facebook post on the Pulwama attack, the Assam police on Monday detained two people for similar reasons.

The police in Tinsukia district detained Khairul Islam, a second-year student of Ledo Junior College, for allegedly posting “Pakistan zindabad” on his Facebook page. “He has been taken into custody and will be interrogated after some formalities,” Amarjyoti Bailung, officer-in-charge of the Ledo outpost, told reporters. A mob had handed over Mr. Khairul, the son of a retired soldier, to the police.

In Goalpara district, the police detained Shahanur Islam, 21, of Simlitola village, for “offensive” comments posted on social media.

The arrests happened on a day when officials of Guwahati’s Chandmari police station found Papri Z. Banerjee, an English teacher suspended by a private college on Saturday, missing from her residence.

“She was supposed to come to the police station today [Monday] for her statement, but we came to know she has been missing since Sunday,” a police officer said.

The police had registered a case against Ms. Banerjee following complaints about her Facebook posts on Pulwama. Soon after her suspension, Ms. Banerjee posted on social media that she had been receiving death and rape threats.
