A day after two woman inmates of the government-funded Aasra Homes, short-stay home in Patna, died under mysterious circumstances, the police on Monday arrested the manager and secretary of the NGO, which ran the shelter.

An FIR has been lodged against the arrested persons, Chirantan Kumar and Manisha Dayal, and a doctor and an auxiliary nurse midwife attached to the shelter home, who are absconding.

“Two persons Chirantan Kumar and Manisha Dayal have been arrested in the case while, the doctor and the ANM associated with the Aasra short stay home are absconding,” Station Officer in-charge, Rajiv Nagar, Rohan Kumar said.

Patna District Magistrate Kumar Ravi told reporters that the viscera of the two dead inmates have been preserved for further investigation.

The two inmates Poonam, 17, and Babli, 40, were brought to the Patna Medical College and Hospital for emergency medical attention on Sunday but the doctors declared them brought dead. The two had allegedly fallen sick on Friday night with diarrhoea, vomiting and high fever. The police said they were informed about the incident later.

Meanwhile, photographs of Ms. Dayal, a former model, with several politicians across party lines have gone viral on social media. Sources told The Hindu that Ms. Dayal was running several NGOs. Senior ruling party JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak, whose photograph with Ms. Dayal has been circulating on social media, responding to media persons, said: “We’re politicians and we visit many events to inaugurate them and people get photographs with us… how do we know them?…I’m not aware of this lady.”
