Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav on Thursday demanded that the ruling BJP government in Haryana compensate farmers who have suffered huge losses in the recent rains across the State.

“Cotton, paddy and bajra crops have been extensively damaged due to the rain, adding to the miseries of the farmers. The government should fully compensate them,” said Mr. Yadav.

Mr. Yadav said bajra crop has started arriving in the markets yet no guidelines have been issued by the State government for procuring the crop, resulting in a complete state of confusion among farmers. “If the government fails to purchase every grain of bajra at the minimum support price, we will launch a Statewide agitation against the government from October 1,” said Swaraj India president.

“We will start our agitation from Rewari and shut down mandis across the State,” he added.

Mr. Yadav also asked the State government to issue directions to insurance companies to immediately compensate farmers who have suffered losses due to the recent rains.

Act amendment

Mr. Yadav said the recent amendment to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Haryana Amendment) Act, 2017, by the BJP government would go against landowners.
