Statue of Rani Gaidinliu to be installed

: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh announced on Wednesday that the government will install a life-sized statue of Rani Gaidinliu, the first freedom fighter of Kabui (Zeliangrong) tribe.

He made the announcement during the celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Rani Gaidinliu organised in Imphal on Wednesday by the Kabui Mothers’ Association.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei said that the government is trying to bring down the developmental imbalances between the hills and the valley.

From a very young age, Gaidinliu had revolted against the British government. She was later arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for waging war against the government. After independence she was released from prison.

In recognition of her contribution to the freedom movement, Jawaharlal Nehru had given her the title Rani.

She was conferred Freedom Fighter Tamra Patra award in 1972 and Padma Bhushan in 1982 and many other awards.

The government also released a one Rupee postage stamp of Gaidinliu.

On January 26, the government released commemorative Rs 100 and for mass circulation Rs 5 coins.

Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi and Zeliangrong Students’ Union Delhi are celebrating the birth centenary of Rani Gaidinliu for one full year in Delhi. The formal programme started on January 26 which is the day she was born.
