SP-rank officers to check mob violence, lynching cases in Punjab

The Supreme Court had laid down guidelines for preventive measures

In compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court, the Punjab government has designated Superintendent of Police-rank officers as nodal officers for taking measures to prevent incidents of mob violence and lynching.

An official statement said that the Supreme Court in a judgment on July 17, 2018, had laid down guidelines for undertaking preventive, remedial and punitive measures in incidents of mob violence and lynching. “The SP-rank officers have been designated in compliance of the guidelines passed by Supreme Court,” added the statement.

“Measures have also been taken to identify district, sub-division or villages where instances of mob violence and lynching had been reported in the recent past,” said the statement. It added that directions have been issued to all concerned to ensure that officer in charge of the police station of the identified areas be extra cautious if such instances come to their notice.

Being sensitised

“The police are being sensitised to respond to such situations immediately to eradicate hostile environment against any caste or community which may be targeted in such incidents,” added the statement.
