To target the Yogi Adityanath government for failing to make roads free of potholes, the Rashtriya Lok Dal on Thursday launched an online campaign, encouraging people to post selfies with potholes in the background.

Named “Selfie with Gaddha,” the campaign was launched here by RLD vice-president Jayant Chaudhary.

He released a three-minute video highlighting the pothole problem in Uttar Pradesh. With a catchy tune, the video has a humorous take on potholes and also shows common people posting selfies with potholes.

Several extensions

After coming to power in March 2017, the BJP government had promised to make roads in Uttar Pradesh pothole-free by June 15. Despite several extensions the drive did not meet its target, providing fodder for the Opposition parties to taunt the BJP, especially PWD Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

“The government promised to make roads pothole-free but the truth is not hidden from anybody. To expose its lies on potholes, the RLD has initiated the ‘selfiewithgaddha’ campaign,” said Mr. Chaudhary at a press conference.

Supriya Sule’s idea

Taking to Twitter, he thanked NCP leader Supriya Sule for giving the idea of selfie with potholes. “Hope it catches on and together we put pressure on governments to mend their ways!” Mr. Chaudhary said.

The RLD pointed out that 3,597 people died in road accidents in the country in 2017, of which the highest were in Uttar Pradesh, 987.
