Ajay Kumar Agarwal, Deputy Director, Directorate of Culture, Uttar Pradesh, has written to the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police of Agra, asking them to replace one of the two statues of B. R. Ambedkar with that of Deen Dayal Upadhyay on the premises of the Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC).
“Directions have been issued to replace the older of the two life-size statues of Ambedkar with that of Deen Dayal Upadhyay on the premises of the Agra Municipal Corporation,” says the letter, a copy of which is with The Hindu .
Mr. Agarwal’s letter mentions that the proposal was initially sent to the government by a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Jagan Prasad Garg.
Maintain law and order
The letter asks the two senior officials to ensure that the installation takes place without any disturbance to law and order.
Local Dalit groups said they would protest the move.
