A seven-year-old mentally challenged girl who got trapped in a 50-ft-deep borewell for 30 hours at Ajeetgarh in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, was rescued on Sunday. However, a five-year-old girl in Patna’s Phulwarisharif area was not so lucky as she died during the day after being trapped in a 15-ft-deep borewell for nearly four hours.

The Rajasthan girl was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, District Collector Laxminarayan Soni told PTI over phone.

Sunita, daughter of a farmer, fell into the borewell at around 9 a.m. on Saturday when she went to have a look at it in their neighbours’ farm.

“She was rescued at about 3 p.m. She looks fine,” the Collector said.

A team comprising Army jawans and NDRF personnel carried out the rescue operation.

“Since the girl is mentally challenged and could not speak, there was some problem connecting her to support system inside the borewell by the rescue team,” he said.

The Collector said the digging process was a little slow because of the rocky terrain but “we all got her out safely.”

A number of machines were put in action to remove sand and mud as a precaution to save the girl, officials said.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje greeted the district, civil and police administration, the Army and the NDRF’s rescue teams for successfully evacuating Sunita.

In a statement here, Ms. Raje also extended her greetings to Sunita’s parents.

Rescue fails in Patna

Meanwhile, the borewell turned out to be a death-trap for Babita, the five-year-old girl in Patna’s Phulwarisharif area.

She fell into the borewell in Mitramandal colony, while she was playing with other children.

A rescue operation was launched by the local authorities with the help of the State Disaster Response Team (SDRF) and another hole was dug parallel to the borewell.

The girl, who was inside the hole with almost no oxygen, was taken out by the rescue team after around four hours, the police said.

She was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, where she died during treatment, they said. The SDRF Deputy Commandant A.K. Jha, said the girl’s breathing was weak when she was lifted out.
