P.P. Pandey, Additional Director-General of Police of Gujarat, who has been absconding ever since he was named in the alleged fake Ishrat Jahan encounter case, got interim relief on Monday when a CBI Court granted him anticipatory bail for 48 hours after a hearing that lasted for over four hours.
The senior official was asked by the Supreme Court to appear before the CBI Court in Ahmedabad on Friday. The CBI granted him anticipatory bail for 48 hours and asked him to be present before the court by 10.45 am on July 31for further hearing on his anticipatory bail.
Mr. Pandey resurfaced on Saturday and was admitted to a private hospital on Sunday after he complained of chest pain. He has been underground ever since the investigative agency summoned him in the case.
However, in a dramatic scene on Monday, he was brought to the courtroom on a stretcher after reaching the court in an ambulance.
“P.P. Pandey got himself admitted to the hospital at 11 a.m. on Sunday. He is running high temperature, his creatinin level is high, and his blood sugar level is around 200. It will take him two-three days to normalise,” said a doctor from the hospital. He added that though Mr. Pandey could not be discharged from the hospital, he had expressed his desire to be present in the court even if he was brought by an ambulance. Arrangements were made accordingly.
Mr. Pandey was named as an accused in the preliminary charge sheet filed by the CBI in the case along with suspended IPS officers G.L Singhal, N.K Amin, DG Vanzara, retired DSP J G Parmar, DSP Tarun Barot, and commando Anaju Chaudhary.
