January 19, 2015 11:59 pm | Updated 11:59 pm IST - KOLKATA:

The assault of a woman allegedly by Birbhum police officers on Sunday has kicked up a political storm with the Opposition raising the issue with the Governor.

The BJP, led by party State president Rahul Sinha, met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and submitted a memorandum on Monday.

The former Kolkata Mayor, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, moved the Calcutta High Court on the issue. Admitting the plea of Mr. Bhattacharya, a leader of the CPI(M), Chief Justice Manjula Chellur said she would hear the matter on Tuesday.

The woman complained that the police officers called at her house, looking for her relative, Sheikh Mithun, a local BJP leader. Mithun is wanted in several cases. When they did not find him, the officers took her to a nearby forest and assaulted her She has named the officer in charge of the Parui police station and the Bolpur police station’s CI in her complaint.
