Plight of Phailin-hit continues to remain grave

Out of total wards of Berhampur Municipal Corporation area 30 were seriously affected by the rains that followed the cyclone.

Plight of Phailin-affected inhabitants of Berhampur city continued to remain grave on Friday due to the continuing rains.

Out of total wards of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) area 30 were seriously affected by the rains that followed the cyclone. Flood like situation continued in low laying areas like Alakapuri, Nilanchal Nagar, Basudevpur, Bhavinipur.

Administration, BMC authorities, voluntary organisations and individuals distributed food materials, candles and other items of day-to-day need in these areas. The patients, aged and some women were rescued out of these water- logged low laying areas of the city by tractors and cycles. Personnel of the Fire Department rescued two persons from a water-logged house by using inflatable boat. Food packets were distributed in this area by boats.

In all the 137 slums of the city, situation remained grim. In most slums walls of Phailin damaged houses have started to fall down adding to the woes of the poor. As power is yet to restored most areas of the city and it is supplied for a few hours during night, long queues could be seen in front of PDS retail counters all over the city.
