PK is tax-free in U.P.

‘Everyone should watch it... the film gives an important message’

January 01, 2015 02:30 am | Updated 02:30 am IST - LUCKNOW:

Even as Hindutva organisations continued protests against the screening of the film PK , Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav exempted on Wednesday the Aamir Khan-starrer from entertainment tax, making its tickets cheaper.

“Everyone should watch PK ... the film gives an important message to society. I saw the movie last night and then decided to make it tax-free so that more and more people could see it,” Mr. Yadav told presspersons here.

However, protests intensified across the State immediately after the announcement. The screening was disrupted in several places, particularly Agra, Etah, Kanpur, Meerut, Bareilly and Lucknow.

The BJP accused Mr. Yadav of escalating tensions. “Instead of tackling the situation judiciously, Mr. Yadav has added fuel to fire,” party spokesperson V.B. Pathak said.
