The 52-year-old owner of a diagnostic centre at Gurdwara Road here has been arrested while conducting a sex-determination test. The centre has been sealed and a First Information Report been lodged under the Pre-Conception (PC) and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.
A team from the Gurgaon District Administration nabbed the owner of Bhatia Diagnostic Center while he was conducting a sex determination test. The accused, Rajiv Bhatia, was arrested on the spot.
An FIR under Sections 3, 4, 5, 6 and Rule 9 of PC & PNDT Act has been registered. G.L. Singhal, Project Coordinator with ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ project in Chief Minister Cell, Chandigarh, said the offence was punishable under Section 23 of PC & PNDT Act. Mr. Singhal added that the accused was earlier convicted by a lower court in Gurgaon in a 2001 case, against which an appeal was pending in the Punjab & Haryana High Court. This is the second time he has been caught, for which he can be sentenced for a period of five years as per the provisions of the Act.
This is the second such arrest within a week. Earlier, a doctor of Rama Hospital, Khandsa Road, was caught for conducting a sex determination test on June 8.
