Odisha will retain 9,800 children whose parents have migrated to other States in different seasonal hostels during 2015-16.
The State government had come up with concept of seasonal hostels where wards of migrating parents could stay and pursue uninterrupted school programmes.
Bargarh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj and Nuapada (source districts), Cuttack, Balasore and Khurda (destination districts) are high migration-prone districts. People along with school-going children between 6 and 14 years of age migrate to other districts to work in brick kilns and other odd jobs.
According to School and Mass Education department, as many as 204 seasonal hostels have been opened retaining 7,643 children of migrant families, residential at source and non-residential at destination for continuance of education last year.
This academic session (2015-12015) will see 9,800 school-going children of migrant families being retained in seasonal hostels.
Similarly, 5,152 drop-out and never enrolled children have been identified during 2015-16. Admitted in age appropriate classes, they will be provided special training. As many as 63,86,483 children of the age group of 6 to 14 were enrolled in elementary schools during 2014-15.
Koraput and Rayagada district have more than 700 children each, who have either dropped out or never enrolled in schools. Mayurbjhanj, Khurda and Ganjam districts have also a good number of school drop-out children. No drop-out students was identified in districts such as Cuttack, Deogarh, Angul, Balasore and Angul.
