Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has no plans to advance the elections to the Assembly as anticipated by the State Congress.

“Why should I go for early elections?” Mr. Modi said when asked by journalists at a Hindu Vikram Samvat new year get-together here on Wednesday about the opposition Congress assessment to this effect.

Probably, the Congress central leadership had informed the State party set-up to prepare for an early Parliamentary election, but it had started the exercise in the name of the Assembly elections to mislead the people, he said.

The former Chief Minister and state Congress campaign committee chief Shankarsinh Waghela, had advised the party leadership and the workers at a meeting here on Tuesday to prepare for early elections. He estimated that Mr. Modi might call for elections by June, next year, though they were due only in December.
