A teenage girl in Nawada district of Bihar was tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers and family members for eloping with a boy of different community. The incident took place on the diktat of village panchayat.
The incident happened on Wednesday in Jogiya Maran village under Rajauli police station in Nawada district. The video of the 18-year-old girl tied to a tree and being thrashed by villagers and family members went viral on social media. She remained tied to the tree for around five hours until she became unconscious. Her father Mohd. Farid Ansari justified the punishment to his daughter saying, we want her to get married to someone from our own community.
The village panchayat had passed the order that the girl, who comes from minority community, be tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers for falling in love with a boy of different community. The alleged perpetrators were not arrested but given a warning by the police.
The girl on September 30 had eloped with a cast Hindu male Rupesh Kumar of the neighbouring village and later was caught by the villagers and brought back to the village. When the local media reached the spot, she said she had ran away with him on her own will and she would like to get married to him. Rupesh Kumar is on the run.
