One militant and a soldier were killed in an encounter in Pulwama on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said firing between militants and security forces erupted in Pulwama's Ratnipora area during a cordon and search operation, which was launched in the intervening night jointly by the police, army and CRPF.
"The search party was fired at by militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight. In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of encounter," said the police.
The slain militant's identity and affiliation is being ascertained, the police added.
Two Army personnel also sustained gunshot wounds. "One of the injured,Baljeet Singh, succumbed to his injuries," said the police. The condition of another injured solider is stated to be "critical".
Meanwhile, clashes erupted in parts of Pulwama following the encounter. Internet connections have been snapped.
