A mentally challenged woman was allegedly beaten up by locals on suspicion of being a child lifter, in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

The incident took place in the Barogharia gram panchayat area of the district’s Dhupguri bloc late on Monday night.

“A case of attempt to murder has been lodged and we are trying to identify the perpetrators. No one has been arrested in the case so far,” a senior official of Dhupguri Police Station told The Hindu .

The official also said that the woman suffered head injuries during the assault and has been hospitalised.

“Her condition is stable now,” he added.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court condemned the incidents of lynching against Dalits and members of the minority community as “ horrendous acts of mobocracy ” and asked the Parliament to pass a law establishing lynching as a separate crime.

The Supreme Court also asked the Centre and State governments to ensure "nobody takes the law into his hands nor become a law into himself”.
