The killing of a person in Assam’s Sonitpur district, allegedly by some unidentified people from Arunachal Pradesh, sparked off a blockade on Friday as locals set ablaze a vehicle from the neighbouring State on National Highway-15, a police official said.

One Kalu Orang and three others had gone to Behali Reserve Forest bordering Arunachal Pradesh to cut wood yesterday and did not return till this morning. The three others who returned informed the police that Kalu was allegedly killed by people from Arunachal Pradesh, the official said.

Enraged at the incident, the locals of Behali blocked National Highway-15 from Tezpur in the district to Arunachal Pradesh, the official said.

A vehicle bearing Arunachal Pradesh number plate was set ablaze after its four passengers were asked to come out, they said.

The police have rushed to the forest to recover Orang’s body and also to Behali to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday asked his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Nabam Tuki to take up immediate steps for defusing tension along the inter-State border following the incident.

In a telephonic talk this morning, Mr.Gogoi asked Mr.Tuki to initiate necessary steps in right earnest to defuse the escalating tension and to bring the situation under control.- PTI
