Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Thursday gave a send-off to the Jaipur-based team of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS) -- the makers of the world famous Jaipur foot -- and a 25-member team of doctors, specialists and artisans as they left for Afghanistan for a month-long special on-the-spot fitment camp for Afghan amputees at Kabul.
The team, which was led by the founder and chief patron of BMVSS D.R. Mehta, will conduct the camp from June 8. At this camp, about 1,000 amputees will be equipped with the artificial limbs free of cost.
At a function at the Vice President’s House, Mr. Ansari expressed the hope that the team would help restore the lives of those Afghans who lost their limbs during wars and various other reasons. He said conflicts results in loss of lives and limbs. Stating that such sufferings are difficult to be measured in human terms, Mr. Ansari said India as a friendly nation has always tried to bring a smile in the lives of the suffering people and the Jaipur foot has done its bit by providing mobility to the disabled.
