Students of government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Berhampur have developed a low cost pedal-operated hacksaw machine that can be a great help for rural small scale fabrication units and engineering industry.

With support of instructors like Gayachand Sahu, Arun Kumar Patra, Bichitra Padhiary, a group of students admitted in fitter trade of the institution have used portions of a discarded cycle to prepare this innovative industrial equipment. Hacksaw machines are basic equipment of any fabrication and engineering industry. In small scale industries, they are either used manually or use small electric motors for their running. “Our students considered problem of regular power failures in rural areas while designing this hacksaw machine,” said Mr Sahu.

This innovative instrument does not use power but is more efficient than hand operated hacksaws.

This pedal-operated low-cost hacksaw can cut through materials ranging from metals, hard plastic as well as several other materials. As per the group involved in designing of this equipment, its precision would be increased further in next phase through addition of other facets to it. According to the instructors, cost of production of such a hacksaw would be less than Rs.4,000, which is affordable for any rural entrepreneur owning fabrication or engineering unit. Moreover thrown away damaged cycles can be the main component of this innovative equipment. Running of this unit also does not need any skill and it can be run by a lay man.
